Do you want to become a Public Relations Firm Owner?

Are you a voracious reader, a credible, creative writer and a convincing talker? Are you always on top of what is going on around you and attuned to public opinion? Do you have good instincts for what makes news? If so, your nose for news and communication skills may be just what you need to become a public relations firm owner. A VocationVacations® career mentorship with Janet Prensky, senior vice president at Aigner/Prensky Marketing Group, will help you find out if you have what it takes to find that angle or hook that sells a story.

“I have always enjoyed talking,” laughs Janet Prensky. “And always thought I would go into some type of communications business.” A journalism and communication major, Janet’s first job after college was as a news writer for CBS radio in Boston. A union strike ended that job after only six weeks. However, Janet did not even make it to the ground floor on the elevator before she had a new job. While on the elevator, she was complimented on her voice and asked if she would be interested in becoming a traffic network reporter. “I became known as ‘Unit 12’ reporting on traffic,” she remembers. She called it her “bread and bumper” job.

Janet’s next move was to television when she became a live announcer at WBZ, the CBS Boston affiliate, and then later a news writer for the station. Unfortunately, a change of staff at the station left Janet without a job and pondering what her next career step should be. She realized to stay and grow in the communications field, you needed to be “nimble” and able to figure out ways to continually reinvent yourself. A fact that remains true today.

“Since I had already been able to earn a living with my voice, I decided to take a broadcast voice class at Emerson College,” shares Janet. Her instructor, Anne-Marie Aigner, was getting ready to start a public relations agency and asked Janet if she knew of anyone who might be interested in working with her. “I said ‘how about me?’,” laughs Janet. She joined Anne-Marie in the launch of her new business.

That was 25 years ago. Today, the Aigner/Prensky Marketing Group is a successful, boutique marketing and public relations firm specializing in consumer public relations. “Our goal is for our clients to be top of mind with consumers,” explains Janet. Aigner/Prensky has represented a variety of both business and individual clients including super markets, a party supply chain, summer camps, non-profits and public figures like Nancy Kerrigan.

With a staff of ten (not to mention Lucy and Ricky the on-site, adjunct canine staff members), the firm offers a full gamut of marketing and public relations services, everything from the basic press release, to social media outreach and special events.

Janet believes the power of “word of mouth” and third party endorsements remain at the core of good public relations. However, the channels of communication have changed with the advent of social media. No longer is print and television top of mind when it comes to influencing consumers and the public. “Social media outlets have given public relations professionals a whole new communication dimension to spread the word,” explains Janet. “Consequently, it is a real advantage for someone getting into the business today to understand the integral part social media plays in generating visibility for clients.”

The public relations business can be challenging. There are no guarantees the story you worked so hard to place, will actually be aired, printed or picked up online. However, Janet still loves what she does. She loves the creativity and the opportunity to continually come up with new ideas and ways of looking at things. “We are always brainstorming. There are no bad ideas,” she believes. Spend a few days with Janet, and she thinks you, too, will “catch the fever” and come away with a new awareness and increased passion for what can be accomplished through creative and strategic public relations efforts.
