Do you have a vision and a voice for storytelling? Do you find yourself jotting down ideas for stories, inventing characters and creating dialogues? Are you passionate enough about writing to survive the highs and lows of the profession? If you would like to bring your writing skills and your imagination to the world of television script writing, Darlene Hunt can help you pursue your interest and explore your talent on a VocationVacations® career mentorship on how to become a television script writer.

Growing up on a farm in Kentucky, Darlene Hunt had a lot of time to explore her imagination and creativity. She developed an interest in acting and went on to earn a degree in theater at Northwestern University. Along the way, she also found a creative outlet in writing. She brought her performing and writing skills together appearing in a play she co-authored and toured the country with for several years after graduation.

During this time, she also began doing stand-up comedy which provided her an opportunity to bring her writing skills to a different venue. In 1997, Darlene moved to Los Angeles. “I wrote another play which I starred in and which brought attention to my writing,” says Darlene. Sean Hayes, who played Jack on the hit comedy series Will & Grace, attended a performance and asked Darlene to write a part for him in the show. She did, and this led to Darlene writing an episode for Will & Grace which launched her career as a television script writer.

“Since then it has been non-stop writing,” laughs Darlene. Now, writing mostly comedy she has written twelve pilots for various networks; has a script deal with Sony Studios; wrote on staff for the new Beverly Hills 90210; and is currently working with actress Sandra Oh on a film Oh is producing and starring in. She’s also writing a pilot for ABC Family about four sisters growing up in the South. “I am also currently working on probably my favorite project ever. A pilot for Showtime called The C Word, a dark comedy about a woman who finds she is dying from cancer and decides not to tell anyone. Darlene enjoys writing dark comedy, and this is her first opportunity to write for this genre, which she describes as “laughter through tears.”

The life of a television script writer is definitely unpredictable and requires patience, determination and the ability to laugh at rejection. “I’ve cried to my agents after a producer has rejected an idea of mine saying inane things like, ‘It’s as if I showed them a bunch of pictures of my kids, and they said that one’s ugly’,” shares Darlene. She stresses that the writing part is the fun side of her job. The challenge comes when you are ready to sell it. “Although a script may be bought by a network, a small percentage are made into pilots, and then an even smaller percentage are picked up as series,” explains Darlene. “The goal is to get a series on the air, but I’ve made a lot of money just getting close.”

Writers come from all walks of life and backgrounds. “You don’t have to have a degree in writing or a particular background to be a successful writer,” says Darlene. “You do need to honor your own creativity, write from an authentic point of view and be committed to getting your work out, seen, and into the hands of decision makers.”
