Would you like to help people transform the way their bodies look, feel and perform? Are you a patient teacher with creative and diplomatic communication skills? Can you see yourself turning your passion for health and wellness into a profitable business? If so, Mo Wolfe, owner of Evolution Pilates, offers a VocationVacation® on how to become a Pilates studio owner. Join Mo in her spacious studio in Port Washington, New York, (25 miles east of Manhattan on the north shore of Long Island) and be prepared to exercise your mind and body. A native New Yorker, Mo Wolfe built a highly successful 15-year career in the magazine publishing business culminating at TIME, Inc. It was while living in California for two years that she discovered Pilates. “As an adult, I never found an exercise I liked before Pilates,” says Mo. “I not only enjoyed the exercise, but the sense of community the studio provided.” When she returned to New York, her friends said California must have agreed with her since she looked great. “I told them it wasn’t California, it was Pilates and became a zealot, urging everyone to try it!” When Mo found herself at a crossroad in her professional and personal life, her introduction to Pilates would turn out to be the catalyst for a new career. “I realized what I liked best about my previous career was the teaching aspect of my position,” remembers Mo. So, she decided to align her love of teaching with her new found passion for Pilates. “I never considered buying a Pilates studio, or teaching at one, I just decided I wanted to open one – ground up. I guess my corporate ego was still at work,” laughs Mo. “I had a clear idea of what I wanted my studio to be like,” she explains. “I wanted a light and soothing spa-like atmosphere with no distractions, where clients could concentrate on what they were doing and make the most of the only hour in the day they may have to themselves.” Mo did her research on the industry and became a certified Pilates instructor. Her goal for her studio was to maintain the integrity and safety of Pilates and focus on the quality of her instruction, not the quantity of students in each class. In 2003, Mo achieved her dream with the opening of Evolution Pilates. The studio offers both individual and group lessons, all by appointment only. With state-of-the-art equipment and a team of six certified Pilates instructors, the program at Evolution Pilates begins with a series of individual sessions to prepare clients for participation in group lessons – a practice which emphasizes Mo’s commitment to safety and the individualized quality of her program. “Our instructors project a healthy image and personify the essence of traditional Pilates,” says Mo. “Our goal is for our clients to leave feeling lighter and energized.” The instructors’ rewards are the great people they meet and the satisfaction of knowing they are improving their quality of life. Depending upon where you live and the local economy, Mo believes there are viable opportunities for people interested in opening their own Pilates studio. However, she cautions the importance of setting realistic expectations. “I had a business plan, but didn’t realize how long it would take to ramp up the business,” explains Mo. “It takes time to build a client base. It is important to set goals and plan for slow, steady growth and be prepared for the bad weeks.” Mo loves what she does and does not regret leaving the corporate world or it’s paycheck behind. “We set ridiculous monetary goals on ourselves,” believes Mo. “It is more important to work hard, live comfortably and be happy in what you are doing.” Although nothing, including owning a Pilates studio, may be as easy as it looks, Mo believes if you enjoy it, it will feel easy.
