Do you have a genuine interest in people? Are you curious about what they do and how they do it? Can you talk to anyone about anything? Are you a good writer whose words can “sell”? Then your interpersonal skills and creativity may be the right match to become a publicist. Find out on a VcationVacations® career mentorship with acclaimed publicist Lyla Foggia at her scenic office located in the resort hamlet of Welches, Oregon, at the base of Mt. Hood. Who would have thought the young girl who grew up on the family farm in Oregon milking cows, would one day be personally hired by Steven Spielberg and trade her rural roots for the glamour of Los Angeles? But that’s the story of publicist Lyla Foggia. Lyla left the family farm to attend the University of Washington initially interested in pursuing careers either in law or non-profit. However, while working as an intern for the ACLU, she was asked to do a press release. “I said ‘what is a press release?’,” laughs Lyla. But, she intuitively knew how to work with the media and quickly understood the power of publicity. A new career path opened up for Lyla. While living in Seattle, Lyla began working for the Seven Gables Theaters while serving as a visual arts journalist for the Seattle Sun and the West Coast edition of ArtWeek. “At that time, I never dreamed of being a publicist,” remembers Lyla. But when her husband took a job in Los Angeles, she found fortuitous windows of opportunity opening for her. Her first job in Los Angeles was as a staff publicist for First Artists Productions co-owned by Barbra Streisand, Dustin Hoffman, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen and Sidney Poitier. “With the recession going on, it was the only job available in L.A.,” Lyla explains. As it turned out, it was the right job and would lead to a successful, exciting career as a publicist. Over the next seven years, Lyla went from being a junior publicist to a vice president. She occupied such positions as Director of Publicity for ABC Motion Pictures and National Broadcast Publicity Manager for 20th Century Fox, where she played a key role in the box office success of films such as “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” and “All That Jazz.” She also worked for Columbia Pictures on a number of other films including “Kramer vs. Kramer,” “China Syndrome” and “E.T. – The Extra-Terrestrial.” She was ultimately hired by TriStar Pictures as their vice president of publicity. However, in the late 80’s, after ten very successful years in the business, Lyla and her husband decided to return to Oregon. “I was burnt out and needed a change,” remembers Lyla. But her career as a publicist was far from over. Shortly after her move, Lyla was recruited to launch “LIVE With Regis and Kathie Lee.” With all the technology advancements, Lyla could easily work anywhere. And that is just what she did. Working out of her picturesque, riverside office at the base of Mt. Hood, Lyla has built a hugely successful boutique public relations marketing agency working with film, books, the performing arts and other clients around the country. With a wealth of experience in all aspects of the business, Lyla brings a holistic approach to working with her clients. “I am involved in every aspect of branding them and their products from web sites to media kits to art work,” shares Lyla. “I strive to find what differentiates a client. What their unique ‘DNA’ is that will set them apart and earn them the visibility they deserve.” In addition to her work as a publicist, Lyla is also an author. Her passion for fly fishing prompted her to write “Reel Women: The World of Women Who Fish,” the first book to detail the contributions of women to the sport of fishing. Lyla has reinvented herself several times and believes in taking risks if you are to achieve what you truly want out of life. “You need to follow your passion and sometimes take big risks to achieve your goals. No one can give you your ‘dream,’ you have to step up and make it happen,” Lyla says. If you are ready to find out if you have the tenacity, personality and skills to become a publicist, Lyla is ready to help you in your exploration.
