  Book This Dream Job Vacation
When you are at a live event, are you more impressed with the details of the show going on around you than the main act? Do you catch yourself wondering how they did an audio trick or created some fancy lighting? And who is "they", anyway? If you have a strong desire to learn the off-stage intricacies of the production world, then your dream job may be exactly what VocationVacations mentor, Michael McIntosh, has been doing for years.

A guru in the industry, Michael is happy to take you under his wing for two days and show you how to orchestrate all the elements that it takes to bring a production together. You are LA-bound with this VocationVacation so it's time to shake the stars out of your eyes and get serious about test-driving your dream career.

Technical director, line producer, unit production manager, stage manager, producer, tour manager, talent coordinator, site supervisor. These job titles describe one guy: Michael McIntosh. It depends on the day. It depends on the project. It depends on which "hat" he is asked to wear but the consistency is found in the flawless attention to detail and creative genius with which he executes each project. When you mix his level of experience in the industry with his charming personality and undaunted passion, there is no question why productions all over the world call on Michael.

Whether it's a concert, feature film, all-star benefit, television special or a multi-media international corporate event, Michael shines at documented and live productions. It's no wonder he's worked with superstars such as Madonna, Eminem, Lenny Kravitz, and Justin Timberlake, not to mention collaborating with industry legends such as Tony Bennett and Count Basie. Michael has lent his expertise to the Grammy and Emmy Awards and received a certificate of "Special Congressional Recognition" from the United States Congress for his work with the United Service Organization. The USO is a private, non-profit organization that provides moral and recreational services to members of the U.S. Military worldwide.

Michael actually started off on the performing side of things. He was professionally performing at age sixteen and then days after graduating high school was touring with various well-known musicians. He contributed his talents in harmonica, percussion, lead vocals, and harmonizing vocals. Michael took a little time off when the industry began going through a major transition. Frustrated in the midst of trying to put together an all-star band, he got a call from a friend who wanted him to come on board and help him produce a project. Michael said, "I'm a performer. Are you nuts?" And his friend replied, "No, Michael, actually you know more about production than most people in this business!" It was multiple major acts on one bill. So Michael did it, loved it, and the rest is history.

The transition was natural for Michael. All the while he had been performing; he was extremely in tune to what was taking place off the stage. He was constantly going over to the lighting and audio technicians and asking how they did things. He was intrigued by what elements actually comprised a production. He explains, "It always amazed me. The process of starting with an empty space and transforming it into a stage and backdrop with audio and lighting to the point when a performer comes out and the whole show scares the you-know-what out of people." Michael realized that working on the other side of the stage felt just like home. He is always learning and challenging himself. In between working productions, he is seeing other shows and events so he can pick up new ideas for his next project.

Based in Sherman Oaks, CA, Michael is truly in love with production and refers to it as his major passion. "When I find someone that shows an interest in pursuing production as a career, I ask one simple question: Why?” says Michael. Too often he finds that people are glazed over with the thought of getting rich and famous. For these people, he points to the nearest bus stop and advises them to hop on the next one. "This is an industry that can eat you alive", he warns. Michael strongly believes that if you are inspired or motivated by the wrong things you will not make it. On the flip side, when he finds someone that really gets excited about production and they exude passion for art work, tones, and textures of a production, then he knows that they "get it".
