Have you ever wondered what it would be like if your clients were canine companions? Would it be more fun to train a group of tail-wagging pooches than sit through another meeting? If making a huge difference in the lives of dogs and their owners sounds like your dream job, then it’s time to leave the office behind and enjoy a VocationVacations® dream job holiday with Jenifer Vickery at the pawsitive dog and learn what it takes to become a professional dog trainer
Jenifer’s love affair with four-legged friends began as a young girl with horses. She was sure a career combining all things equine along with a passion for journalism was in her future as she completed an associate degree in Applied Animal Science and then a bachelor’s degree in English. During graduate studies in Boston, a feisty dog she adopted from a local animal shelter needed a bit of training, and Jenifer’s life took a completely new direction.
Beginning in 1993, Jenifer began working with Compatible Canine Center in Brookline, MA, eventually becoming a trainer herself. In 1998, the pawsitive dog was born, focusing on what Jenifer calls “owners’ and dogs’ lifelong partnerships.” Her success at building long-term relationships based on clients’ changing needs, sparked one of her most popular programs called “Barks and Babies”, aimed at helping furry family members adapt as babies arrive and grow.
Over time, the pawsitive dog has branched out into other areas such as doggie field trips, day school, an intense, overnight accelerated training option and a boarding program that is more like summer camp for Fido. By focusing on individually tailored programs for each animal and mentoring expert staff, Jenifer has developed a thriving business built entirely on referrals from satisfied customers.
On a VocationVacation with Jenifer, you will be immersed in a typical high-energy day that starts early in the morning as dogs arrive for day school. You’ll work one-on-one with Jenifer and her team to learn about everything from pre-enrollment consultations to how to evaluate a dog’s personality and craft a program specific to each client. Join in as classes are conducted at all levels from beginner basics to superstar show dogs. In addition, Jenifer will show you the “ins and outs” of running a small business from finances to marketing to ongoing education.
In her spare time, Jenifer can be found hard at work completing a book on dog training. She’s assisted in this task by her four permanent critters at home, two Belgian Malinois, a Keeshond and “Traak” a German Shepherd with a very lengthy show dog resume of his own. She’s a regular phone-in expert for listeners on WBCN radio in the Boston area and she coaches expectant parents how to prepare their dogs for their new baby at Boston’s Isis Maternity Centers. And if that isn’t enough, she also volunteers with cat adoptions by training dogs and selected cat adoptees to be good buddies.
Join Jenifer and the team at the pawsitive dog for a unique VocationVacation, and you will leave knowing why Jenifer smiles and says her greatest satisfaction each day comes from “watching owners and dogs grow and evolve into a long-term success story.”
