Are you both a diner and an observer when you are in a restaurant? Do you think you have the business sense and the customer service savvy to run your own restaurant? Are you ready to discover the challenges and rewards of being your own boss? Then get “your order in” now to learn how to become a successful pizza shop owner/restaurateur on a VocationVacations® career mentorship with Pete Howey and his team at Peace A Pizza in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, just 15 minutes from Philadelphia.

Pete Howey worked in the insurance business for a number of years before pursuing the idea of owning his own business. “I worked in restaurants while I was in high school and college,” explains Pete. “So I felt I knew the basics of the business and thought restaurant ownership was a logical and doable direction if I wanted to own a business.”

Pete and two partners looked at purchasing a franchise, but they found the desirable options were too expensive. The solution was to start their own unique pizza restaurant specializing in serving top quality pizzas and offering an extensive selection of pizza by the piece. The per “piece” focus prompted the naming of their restaurant Peace A Pizza which opened in 1996.

Today, there are 15 Peace A Pizza restaurants located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Florida. Eight are owned by Pete and his partner Aaron Nocks, and seven are franchise operations. Their “recipe” for success is based on using fresh gourmet quality ingredients to produce their pizzas; their unusually large selection (25 – 30) of pizza by the slice; and their commitment to doing whatever it takes to make the customer happy. “If someone tries a new slice of pizza and they don’t like it, we trade them for whatever they want,” Pete says.

Owning a restaurant requires attention to all the details from production, to managing the financials, to training and retaining good staff. “You have to be ready to step up and step in to do whatever it takes to keep the customer happy,” stresses Pete. He believes the ultimate goal of any restaurant is to deliver a high quality product in a reasonable time frame. To help insure all Peace A Pizza locations live up these standards, franchisee owners go through an extensive training program including the 12-pie challenge of making 12 pizzas in 45 minutes.

Catering is an important part of Peace A Pizza’s business, as well as their popular kids’ parties. Kids have the chance to make their own pizzas and meet “Slicey” the restaurant mascot. Peace A Pizza is recognized as an outstanding supporter of its communities and is involved in hundreds of community fund raisers. From black tie galas to sporting venues, Pete and his team donate time and product to both on- and off-site fund-raising events.

Whether you are serving pizza, filet mignon or tofu, Pete believes the fundamentals behind running a restaurant are the same. “You have to be able to understand and manage the “back of the house,” your labor force and food costs,” he explains. Pete and his team are ready to share with you a behind the scenes look at how they manage these fundamentals and serve some of the best pizza you’ve ever tasted.
