Are you passionate about helping others find the motivation to get and stay fit? Do you believe teaching fitness is not just a job but a profession? Are you ready to meet the physical and mental challenges to become successful in this exciting, continually evolving profession? A VocationVacation® with Len Glassman, owner of Personal Best Training & Pilates Center, could be what you need to get “in shape” to become a personal trainer and fitness center owner. Join Len at his studio in Garwood, New Jersey, 30 minutes from Manhattan, and find out if you are “fit” for this new career. Len knows a lot about reinventing yourself and discovering what makes you happy. He laughs and describes his journey as “going from writing briefs, to helping people fit into theirs.” Len earned a law degree from Seton Hall in 1990 and spent 12 years working as private and in-house counsel. He admits he became an attorney for the financial rewards and never really thought about what the job would be like. “I discovered I hated it,” remembers Len. “I didn’t like who I was becoming and the adversarial role of an attorney.” When he was laid off from his job as in-house counsel for a hospital, he knew he did not want to continue as an attorney. So now what? The day after he was laid off he ran into an acquaintance who worked out at the same gym. “She had on a yellow jacket with the name Personal Best Training Center on it,” explains Len. “I asked her about the name, and she explained it was a new fitness facility she and her husband were opening, and she invited me to stop by.” The next day Len took her up on her invitation, and what would turn out to be an introduction to a whole new career. “Since high school I had always worked out but never dreamed you could make a living as a fitness professional,” explains Len. But he soon discovered it was possible. Len began working at Personal Best Training Center and took courses to become certified as a personal trainer and health nutritionist. “I had to figure out a lot of things on my own on how to run a business.” When he was offered the opportunity to purchase the business in 2005, he was ready. Today, Personal Best Training & Pilates Center has a staff of ten certified personal trainers and two certified Pilates instructors. “This is not a gym environment. It is a small, quiet studio not open to the public. Our services are by appointment only,” describes Len. “We work with our clients to customize their fitness programs to match their individual personalities and lifestyles.” Clients can choose to participate in small group or individual training sessions; rigorous outdoors boot camps; and individual or small group Pilates classes. “Our clients can mix and match; there are no contracts; and we offer flexible scheduling,” Len says. He has all types of clients. “We have some who are ‘lifers’, those who ‘stop and start’ and those who occasionally just want to add something new to their workout regiment.” Len has never regretted his decision to leave the legal practice. He actually finds his lawyering skills – negotiating, communicating, relationship building - have been put to better use in his new profession. But he admits being fitness professional has its challenges. “You need to stay on top of all the new developments in the industry, be prepared to continue to learn and evaluate where you are in your career now and where you want to be in the future,” offers Len. The best ways to get started in the fitness business? “Go to the library and read everything you can on fitness and nutrition - it’s free. Then investigate and sign up for accredited professional programs in personal training and nutrition. And most importantly, find a mentor,” Len says.
