Are you ready to take your ability to role play to a higher level? Do you have the enthusiasm and creativity that makes for a good storyteller? Can you live with uncertainties in your life in order to follow your passion and reap the rewards? Then maybe it is time to write a new script for your future. Join actor Peter Wingfield on a VocationVacations® career mentorship as he shares with you both the challenging and exciting sides of what it takes to become an actor. When Peter was 17, he discovered acting while attending a four-week drama camp in Wales where he grew up. “I knew then I loved acting, but I didn’t have the courage to pursue it,” remembers Peter. Instead, he completed his undergraduate degree at Oxford and went on to medical school. However, when it came time for Peter to take his final exam to become a doctor, he found himself at a crossroad. “I knew if I took that final exam and became a doctor, that would define who I was, and that wasn’t how I saw myself or who I wanted to be. I wanted to be an actor.” He also realized if he completed his certification he would always be tempted to fall back on a “safe” profession rather than the uncertainties of a career in acting. Peter chose to follow his passion for acting. He went on to spend three years in drama school in London. Immediately after completing this program, he got a role in an English television series. Ironically, he played a medical student. “I had done a lot of research for this role. I take my method preparation really seriously,” laughs Peter. He soon landed another role in the well-known television series, “Highlander”, which aired in the United States, Canada, France and Germany. That role brought him to Vancouver B.C. In 2005, Peter and his family moved to Studio City, California, to take advantage of additional opportunities and prospects in North America. Peter’s film and television credits are varied and extensive, and he enjoys both genres. “With a film you have all the information going in and can truly absorb yourself in the character,” Peter explains. “With a television series the character develops over time and new story lines are created.” Peter has appeared in many television series including “24”, “Medium” and “Men in Trees”. His feature films include “X-Men 2”, “Catwoman” and “Highlander: The Source” and “Highlander: Endgame”. Over the years he has had the opportunity to work with actors like Kiefer Sutherland, Tom Wilkinson and Brian Cox, to name a few Peter particularly admires. Peter believes there is not just one personality type that makes for a good actor. “We all are actors in some ways, taking on different roles depending upon who we are with or where we are.” However, being a professional actor takes the ability to deal with uncertainty and rejection. “Being a good actor has more to do with what you are like when you are not working, then when you are working. You need to not take yourself too seriously and have a good perspective on how all this fits into the whole scheme of things.” Peter loves what he does and is eager to share with you the many sides of his profession and provide a hands-on opportunity to explore your abilities and interest. Peter followed his passion for acting; maybe it is time you did, too.
