Do you want to be a Dog Trainer and Dog Daycare Owner?
“No matter how little money and how few possessions you own, having a dog makes you rich” - Louis Sabin Would you like to spend your days giving “man’s best friend” the kind of care and love a dog deserves? Are you an insightful communicator who is adept at understanding the expectations of both two-legged and four-legged clients? Turning your love for dogs into a business is possible, and Erin Kramer is ready to show you how to become a dog trainer and dog daycare/kennel owner on a VocationVacation® at Puppy Love Dogs in Sacramento, California. A dog lover since she was a child, Erin Kramer was a student at the University of California, Santa Cruz, studying modern Russian literature and planning to go to law school. However, when the time came to take her LSAT and enter law school, she began to question if the corporate world was the best choice for her. “I began to think about what my true passion was, and realized I wanted to explore the possibility of working with dogs,” remembers Erin. Along with her dog Rocky, Erin packed up her car and headed to Canada to enroll in Ben Kersten & The Wonderdogs Professional Dog Training Program, one of the top dog training programs in North America. “I received hands-on instruction and experience in training, dog daycare and boarding,” explains Erin. In 2003, she returned to California and began offering her services as a dog trainer. “I started out offering group training sessions in a park setting. There was no bank loan needed.” Puppy Love Dogs took off, and in 2005 Erin expanded her business by buying property and building a facility for training, daycare, grooming and boarding. Today, Puppy Love Dogs employs two assistant trainers and three kennel technicians who operate out of a beautifully maintained facility. “We want our clients to feel comfortable entrusting their dogs with us and make it as stress free as possible for their dogs,” says Erin. They offer custom boarding care for their canine guests allowing owners to choose from a variety of activities and care options – all for one flat rate. Erin’s staff is highly trained and love dogs. To insure top quality employees, Erin requires each potential employee to do a year unpaid internship as well as community work before joining the Puppy Love Dogs staff. Erin explains her training philosophy is different for every dog. “It depends on the dog, the owner and the situation.” But the foundation of her training is based on “praise, play, train” and the importance of having dogs earn real life rewards through their behavior. Erin emphasizes the importance of taking small steps, repetition, consistency and the role of the owner. “Half of our training is training the owner,” says Erin. Since she started her training in the park, Puppy Love Dogs has grown incrementally. Word of mouth, a web site, flyers and community activities brought business in, and the well-behaved dogs that received training at Puppy Love Dogs have been four-legged testimonials to the effectiveness of that training. With the growth of her business, Erin is now looking to expand with another facility. “My goal is to be the leading dog service provider in northern California, a one-stop, full-service dog compound,” she says. “More than ever, dogs are considered to be part of the family, and people want the best care possible for them.” While on your Dog Trainer & Dog Daycare/Kennel Owner VocationVacations® career mentorship with Erin Kramer at Puppy Love Dogs, activities will include some or all of the following:
