Do you want to be a Catamaran Owner?

Do you wish you could live and work where most people vacation? Would you like to head to the dockin the morning rather than the office? Does having the wind in your face and the sea beneath your feet appeal to your sense of adventure and longing for a more exciting and fun career? Then pull up anchor for a VocationVacations® dream job holiday with Cindy and Terry Adams and their daughter Jennifer Aquia, crew and owners of the Reef Roamer and Quicksilver Snorkel Catamaran Fleet in Key Largo, Florida.

Cindy and Terry’s love of the water brought them together. Originally from Maryland, Cindy was on vacation in Key Largo when she met Terry, a master carpenter from Georgia who had moved to Key Largo in his early twenties to follow his dream of working on the water. Cindy and Terry fell in love, were married, and together set sail on a new adventure.

After spending a few years in Maryland while Cindy’s daughter Jennifer completed high school, the couple returned to Key Largo and their mutual love of the water. Cindy began working for Quicksilver Catamaran, and Terry began working as a captain and manager for a dive company. The excitement of the open sea soon lured their daughter Jennifer as well. Jennifer had earned a masters degree in digital design and had spent two years with a DVD authoring company. However, she decided to trade in her cubicle and join her parents in Key Largo where she eventually gained her 100-ton captain’s license and became manager and head captain of the Reef Roamer Catamaran.

The family’s mutual interests and skills came together when they decided to purchase both the Quicksilver and Reef Roamer snorkel catamarans. Today, this family crew offers snorkeling and sailing adventures as well as special event cruises such as weddings. “We are not just the owners,” says Cindy, who is the secretary and oversees the sales aspect of the company. “We all have integral jobs and are involved in daily operations. Jennifer is one of our captains as well as our marketing specialist, and Terry also works as a captain and handles the maintenance of the vessels.”

The snorkeling and sailing business is great fun, but does make for long days. During their busy season, March through August, the crew arrives at 8 a.m. to prepare the boat for the first trip that leaves at 9 a.m. for a morning of snorkeling, returning at 11:30 a.m. After a quick lunch break, the 12:30 trip sets sail for a two-stop snorkeling adventure returning at 4:30 p.m. just in time to get ready for the 5:30 p.m. trip which doesn’t return to dock until 8:30 p.m. With only a two-person crew per trip, insuring the needs of all the passengers are met can be challenging. “The most challenging cruises are really the busiest ones with 40 passengers,” explains Captain Jennifer. “It can be a bit chaotic at times to maintain order and safety and still provide a fun and relaxing experience.”

While it is hard work, Cindy, Terry and Jennifer wouldn’t trade their jobs for the world, and they are committed to offering memorable and exciting adventures for their passengers. “To be in this business you need to have patience, dedication, a sense of humor, and always be ready to greet the passengers with a smile,” offers Terry. “You have to love what you do as you can be dealing with more than 120 vacationers a day.”

And what is it like to work together as a family? “A family business has it ups and downs just like any other,” explains Cindy. “People think you can get away with more, but we have discovered that more is expected.” Even when the family is on “solid ground”, their conversation tends to turn to business. But ending the day watching the sunset on the water and appreciating the beauty of the marine life and coral reefs is truly a dream job for this family…..and maybe for you.
