Do you enjoying writing and designing? Are you interested in producing a publication that shares ideas and entertains? Are you a savvy business person who understands the importance of knowing your target audience and their interests? Then becoming a magazine publisher may be the right match for your interests and skills. Spend a couple of days with Dan Acree, publisher of Texoma Living! in Sherman, Texas, 45 minutes north of Dallas, and get an inside look at what it takes to become a successful magazine publisher. Dan has more than 35 years of experience in media, advertising, public relations and publishing. He understands media and has done it all – from being one of radio’s youngest major market on-air personalities, to Hollywood publicist, and advertising agency principal. In the early 60s as a young teen in Oklahoma, Dan would listen to the legendary Wolfman Jack on his transistor radio late at night. “Wolfman was considered X-rated, so I had to put my radio under my pillow so my mother didn’t hear,” laughs Dan. He became intrigued with the idea of being a DJ. When the family moved to Los Angeles, Dan began hanging around the KMPC-AM radio station after school hoping to catch a glimpse of an on-air personality or to be noticed. His persistence paid off, and he was offered the opportunity to be a “gofer” for DJ Gary Owens. His career in radio was launched. Ironically, in the 1970’s he got the opportunity to go to work for the man who first got him interested in the radio business. “Wolfman Jack offered me the job as his vice president of marketing and promotion. I would never have thought I would be working for him, and he would become like an ‘uncle’ to me. I realized then anything is possible,” says Dan. In the 80s with the backing of Wolfman, Dan formed Acree & Associates Public Relations and began working with recording artists like Frankie Valli, Paul Revere and The Raiders, Roseanne Cash, Peaches and Herb; and with television series including Three’s Company (ABC), CHiPs (NBC) and The Young and the Restless (CBS). After Acree & Associates was sold, Dan was recruited to be the vice president of marketing and promotion for the Gannett Radio Division. Building on all his experiences, in 1995 Dan opened Acree Creative, a full service advertising agency in Houston, Texas. He began designing and launching newspapers in Texas and Oklahoma. In 1997 he became an investor in two community newspapers in North Texas. Acree Creative moved to Sherman, Texas, in 2000 and a new company, Big Dog Publishing, was launched. Texoma Living! Magazine debuted in 2007. Texoma Living! is a bimonthly regional city magazine focused on lifestyles, business and the rich heritage of this north Texas area of approximately 52,000 households. “The content of the magazine serves the needs of the community,” explains Dan. “Our stories are all locally focused.” Dan designs the entire magazine, which averages 112 pages per issue. The publication has broad reader demographics and delivers over 100,000 reader impressions with a distribution of 20,000 copies. Dan admits the publishing business can be tough. “Eighty percent of all new magazines fail the first year,” he shares. But if you do your research first, your chances are much better. “If you find a market place of around 300,000 that does not have a regional publication, then there may be a viable opportunity there depending on the location and market economics.” Dan not only understands media inside and out, but understands how to take skills and knowledge learned and acquired and use that experience to build new careers and opportunities. Now, Dan is ready to take on the role of mentor and give you an inside look at the world of magazine publishing, much like Wolfman Jack did for him in the world of radio some years back.
