Susan Bernstein

Mission:
To help people to achieve more satisfying, energizing working lives.

VocationVacations Coach Susan BernsteinBio:
Susan is committed to helping people make major changes, and has been through major transitions herself.  She has an MBA from UC Berkeley and fifteen years experience in management consulting, marketing, and executive development roles.  As a management consultant for Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting), she crafted corporate strategies for Fortune 500 retail and healthcare clients. She researched innovative tools to increase salesforce productivity for Intel.  She marketed productivity tools for a company acquired by Franklin-Covey.  She has helped to launch and lead two companies in the educational market.
In early 2001, Susan experienced major life changes:  layoff, divorce, health and family crises.  Her heart called to her to pursue something she loved, but that seemed impractical – the study of psychology.  Susan enrolled at the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute for an MA and then a PhD in Somatic Psychology, a discipline that combines the mind and body for performance enhancement and healing.  Although she did not know exactly what she would do with the degree when she started, she followed her heart and trusted that this path would bring meaning into her life.  During her studies, she was asked to become an adjunct career advisor joined at her MBA alma mater, the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.  She continues in this role part-time today, assisting over 400 MBA students a year.  After they graduated, students would come to her for help when they had become stuck in jobs that sapped their energy.  She decided to blend her business expertise with her somatic psychology counseling skills, and built the Work from Within, LLC career management coaching practice based to guide people to “work from within” and use both their intellect and their natural intelligence to navigate career and life changes.

Interests:
When we move, we change – so I love yoga, dance, swim, hiking, and biking.  I also enjoy cooking dishes I learned while living in Asia, reading about psychobiology, writing, and public speaking.

Favorite Saying:
“There is a force within which gives you life - seek that.  In your body lies a priceless gem - seek that. O wandering Sufi, if you want to find the greatest treasure, don’t look outside.  Look inside, and seek that.” (Rumi)

Most Unique Opportunity:
Making lemonade out of lemons.  In a five-week period in early 2001, my marriage crumbled, my health deteriorated, my close-knit family experienced a major crisis, and I was laid off from my job.   I kept moving — figuratively and literally — through the chaos, and recognized that what seemed like “loss” was really an opening for change.  I went back to school for both a masters and a PhD in somatic (mind-body) psychology.  I became a career management coach to parlay my business expertise with my deep understanding of navigating transitions.  I am energized by helping clients embody the changes they desire in their all aspects of their lives.

Most Unique Adventure:
I traveled in China during the Tiananmen Square incident and was overcome with emotion about the personal impact of the political turmoil.   I transformed my journal entries into a story that was ultimately published in the HongKong Standard newspaper.  The article lead to a series of speaking engagements, and helped me realize and continue to share my passion for writing and sharing stories.
